Who are the candidates for RIRS surgery in Delhi?

  • The recovery of the patient is faster and hospital stay is short.
What are the preparations required to undergo RIRS surgery in Delhi?
  • A non-contrast CT scan of the kidney (NCCT-KUB) is done prior to the surgery. This tells us the exact location, size, and the number of the stones. Also, based on the Handfield units one gets an idea about how hard the stones are.
  • CBC tests are done to assess the fitness for the surgery.
  • Urine culture is done to rule out the infection. This is mandatory before urological surgery.
  • Pre-operative check-up is done by the anaesthetic.
  • In case of diabetes and hypertension, adequate blood sugar and blood pressure control is ensured.
  • Patients are admitted on the day of surgery after overnight fasting.
How is RIRS done?
  • RIRS surgery in Delhi can be done under general or spinal anaesthesia.
  • RIRS kidney stone surgery is done using a flexible urethroscope. The scope is introduced from the urine passage (urethra) into the ureter and from there into the kidney. Once inside the kidney, the stone is visualized and fragmented using laser. The stone fragments are then basketed out.
  • At the end of the procedure, stone clearance is ascertained under x-ray(c-arm) images and a DJ stent is placed.
  • Sometimes the ureter is very tight/narrow for RIRS urology procedure to be performed in the first sitting.
  • In such cases, a DJ stent is placed in the kidney. After a period of two weeks when the ureter is dilated, the RIRS procedure can be easily performed.
What to expect in the post-operative period?
  • Patients stay in the hospital for 1 day post RIRS.
  • They have a urinary catheter placed for 24 hours.
  • Slightly reddish urine may be seen in the immediate post-operative period.
  • Intravenous antibiotics and pain killers are given to prevent the infection and provide pain relief.
  • Patients are given a soft diet on the day of surgery.
  • After 24 hours if there is no fever patients are discharged on oral antibiotics after removal of the catheter.
When is the DJ stent removed?

Typically 2-3 weeks post-surgery, patients are called back for the removal of the DJ stent. It is a daycare procedure and is done under local anaesthesia.
