How is PCNL done?
  • At the beginning of the procedure the anesthesiologist will administer general or spinal anaesthesia to the patient.

  • A small incision around 1cm is placed on the back and using serial dilators a track is established into a kidney leading up to the stone. 
  • Using a nephroscope the stones are equalised fragments into smaller pieces using a laser or a lithotripter and removed.  
  • At the end of the procedure, a DJ stent and if needed a nephrectomy tube is placed.
What to expect in the post-operative period ?
  • Patient stays in the hospital for around 1-2 days.
  • Antibiotic injection is given to prevent infection.
  • Injectable painkiller is given for pain relief.
  • The patient is given a liquid diet after PCNL surgery and gradually shifted to a solid diet.
  • The urinary catheter placed at the time of surgery is removed after 24 hours.
What are the precautions to be taken after discharge?
  • Most patients have an uneventful recovery after discharge.
  • For the first few days patient may notice some blood in urine which gradually clears.
  • A mild pain in the back may be experienced while passing the urine.
  • Patients are advised against heavy physical work or exercise for at least a month after surgery.
  • Normal routine work can be resumed 3-4 days post-surgery.
When is the DJ stent removed?
